Bradford Sub Aqua Club
Hi my name is Callum. I was 13 when I had my first try dive. I have always wanted to dive when I was on holiday, but I was either too young or I wasn’t qualified to dive. So mum and dad bought me a try dive with Bradford BSAC.
I was nervous when I turned up to the pool but everyone made me feel very welcome. Sandra was my instructor for my try dive and she was lovely, she talked me through the kit, safety features and hand signals (which you will find, come in very handy underwater).
I came back a week later to have another dive. Paul was my instructor on this occasion and again I loved every minute of my time underwater. On my second dive I did different things like take my mask off underwater and dive in a straight line using the tiles on the bottom of the swimming pool for guidance. I loved it!!!
A decision was made to join the club and start my ocean diving qualification after a few more pool sessions. The club are great when it comes to borrowing kit and filling tanks etc, but COVID 19 came along and things were put on hold for a while, but that didn’t stop the club holding zoom meetings and quiz nights, so I kept in touch with most divers.
Through the winter when lockdown was eased, I was able to get out into open water and I have been fortunate to dive in Lake Coniston, Crummock Water, Wast Water and Capernwray (socially distancing of course) to name but a few places and have successfully become an Ocean Diver, gaining my award in December 2020.
Now I’m working towards my Sports Diver qualification and I’m still only 14. This has opened up other avenues for me as well because I didn’t know what career to have or go into when I leave school, but I am hoping it will involve diving whether that be in the Navy, Police, Commercial diving or a Dive Instructor (somewhere hot of course).
I can say with my hand on my heart, I was hooked on diving during my first try dive.
I can’t wait to see what 2021 brings because I would love to dive in the sea and maybe dive with some seals.
Being a member of the club has opened my eyes. I have made some nice, possibly life long friends and I’m learning and developing new skills, all because of that first try dive.
If you ever wanted to learn how to dive, come along and give it a go, I don’t think you will regret it, I didn’t.
Go on take the plunge and book a try dive.
